Ducting Estimator

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail orientated Mechanical Estimator with a specialisation in ductwork to join our dynamic team in Tauriko, Tauranga on a permanent basis. MIS is a dynamic fast growing company with 50+ staff and are currently working through a mechanisation project within our production workshop.


The successful candidate will be responsible for providing accurate and competitive cost estimates for ductwork projects in various sectors. You will play a critical role in ensuring the profitability and success of our projects by meticulously analysing project specifications, drawings and other documentation to prepare comprehensive quotes for submission to our clients.

Key Responsibilities

Project Estimation
  • Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to understand the scope of work.
  • Calculate quantities of materials, labour and equipment required for ductwork installation.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, including material takeoffs, labour costs, and subcontractor bids.
  • Analyse subcontractor and vendor quotes to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Bid Preparation
  • Develop and submit detailed bid proposals, ensuring all necessary inclusions, exclusions, and clarifications are clearly communicated.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers and other stakeholders to finalise bids.
  • Ensure all estimates are in compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain organised records of all estimates, proposals and related documentation.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports to management, highlighting potential risks, opportunities, and the overall feasibility of projects.
Client and Vendor Interaction
  • Liaise with clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to clarify project requirements and ensure all parties are aligned.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and post-bid debriefings as required.
  • Negotiate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain best possible pricing.
Continuous Improvement / Training
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, materials, and methods to ensure competitive and accurate estimating.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating processes and tools.
  • Be willing to learn new things.
  • Learn the process of pricing insulation and cladding for commercial pipework projects.
  • To ensure all Health & Safety policies and procedures are adhered to.

Qualifications

Education
  • A technical or trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in mechanical estimating, with strong emphasis on ductwork.
  • Proven experience in preparing estimates for HVAC ductwork in various sectors.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, HVAC, and ductwork design and installation.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in cost estimation.
Communication Skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact professionally with clients and vendors.
Personal Attributes
  • Strong Organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Proactive problem-solver with the ability to work independently.
  • High level of integrity and commitment to ethical business practices.
  • Must be a New Zealand Resident or hold the appropriate work visa.
  • Must hold a full drivers licence.
